I only have one more hen now-(over four years old) she just recently lost her last roommate, whom she actually bullied a lot. Of the
six I have raised- she is the last one now. She sits in the same place under a pile of eggs she has laid all day and night. She becomes very noisy and her neck feathers raise when I go near here to comfort her. I have spoiled her with treats, but she does not seem to be eating her food. Unfortunately I go to college and am unable to comfort her- What could I do to keep her from being so depressed while I am gone..? Is there anything at all I could try?
Thank you.

Get her a couple of friends. Chickens weren't made to exist in solitary confinement. If she passes one day you could always rehome the younger birds.

I am unable to get any more hens...I also think- knowing her- she would fight the new ones if I were to get them.

Quote: Sounds like she is broody to me - she is trying to raise (presumably infertile) eggs. You could get her some fertile ones to hatch if you are able
Quote: What looks mean to us, is normal chicken behavior that is necessary to establish roles in the flock. Some are dominant and some are submissive. As long as she doesn't badly injure them or pluck other chickens bare, a little fighting is normal
