I'm orginally from alabama but I love just outside of Sebastopol now. since getting the chicks I have become surprisingly attached to them and find myself checking on them a thousand times a day lol. We got them because our daughter really wanted chickens and we wanted to give her the learning experience of raising them from chicks. ( she is almost 4 years old) both my husband and myself raises them growing up and wanted to share that with our little gir. So now I'm neurotic worrying over chicks lol
 
I too used an EcoGlow when I was raising my chicks. The risks of headlamp fires definitely made me spend the $80, because it is completely safe. It worked pretty well for me, although I've never used a heat lamp before so I can't really compare the two. It supposedly simulates the heat from a mother hen, and the chicks go under it when they are cold or when they are sleeping. But, the main thing for me was safety, since one of my good friends had a huge fire from her headlamp landing on her chicks.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend for peace of mind
