We finally decided to reuse the old coop that was on our "new to us" farm. It needs a lot of work, but it has a good structure and roof. My question is can my girls could contract diseases from the old structure? It does have a concrete floor, but it is quite broken up. I do have access to a power washer and plan on washing it down well with bleach... This coop hasnt been used in a minimum of 10 yrs, probably 20 is more accurate. Also, the old nesting boxes are still there, but they are rather rough old wood. I have a feeling they are going to be a pain to clean, and near impossible to sanitize. We are limited on what we can spend, but I dont want to "save money" just to end up spending more to treat sick chickies! Any advice/thoughts welcome!

Hi! We had a similar experience also. First I would take a vacuum and use it in the corners and in the nesting box. Also use Seven dust( lightly) or DE to help sanitize. Another thing to get is poultry protecter and use in corners. It is also important you make sure the building is ventilated and completely dry. Thanks and good luck.

Thanks! I Totally forgot about using DE, and Ive got a Big ole bag of it down in my basement! I had thought of using the shopvac, but only because I was tired of shoveling...

Ten years empty of birds should be safe, and cleaning it out will be necessary. I'm using an old coop left here, with additions and fix-ups as needed. If you are using DE, make sure it's food grade, not the other stuff. It will kill some insects as long as it stays dry (as in the coop).. Mary

if you're going to clean with bleach, make sure it has plenty of time to dry and air out before moving chickens in. They are subject to respiratory problems, I'm sure bleach would smell the same to them as it does to us
