Sick Pekin Duck

So I am a new pekin duck owner and I've been putting them in a bathtub every now and then. Last night one of my ducks almost died but I don't know why. It is OK now but I need to know what happened so I can prevent it. I assume it was choking but I don't actually know. The water was dirty by the time I came back up to them but no dirtier than a lake or a pond could be. If any ideas please tell me because I am worried about them now

I need help with my duck I think it's going to die over the last two days it has gotten worse at first it was just falling over and losing balance and as of today it will not keep balance at all it does not have any oil in its feathers when it gets in water it stays wet for a few hours until it dries completely from the sun it will not keep its balance at all and when i put it in water it wont float it flips over in the water too and when i put it on its feet it will not stand on its feet it stumbles over on its back it does not have any balance whatsoever its also losing weight and whiteness it will eat but only if i hold it up and hand feed it, i have 1 other pekin that is 100% fine and my 3 calls are ok too please tell me what i can do

Here are some possibilities -

egg yolk peritonitis, a systemic infection caused by egg yolk getting into the body cavity

some other kind of systemic infection

toxins - could be metal poisoning, lead poisoning, maybe botulism

parasites - more parasites than the duck can hold off with the immune system

It could also be some kind of virus or fungal infection.

All of these can be fatal without the proper treatment. To know for sure, a vet would need to help.

If a vet is impossible, then you could make a guess and start oral antibiotics immediately. That would be my first guess. That would not help with toxins or parasites, but it might be the most likely problem.

Regarding the sick Pekin duck:

Take the duck inside and put it on a box with a soft towel underneath, and hang a lightbulb nearby so there is a constant source of low-level heat. Place a dish of water and small bowl of food nearby as well. In the a.m. check to see if the duck is O.K. and refresh everything and keep your fingers crossed. Good luck.

It might. Glad you are resourceful!!

It is important to know the duck's weight, and give the recommended amount of penicillin based on the weight. Generally it is so many milligrams (mg) penicillin per kilogram (Kg) of duck weight. And a kilogram is 2.2 pounds.

@casportpony is good with medicinal math.

I will see if I can find some links to help you further.

Sometimes you can search for dosage information online specifically for waterfowl - I think one of the hatcheries may have a recommended dosage page....

Here - look at post 18
