What do you do to protect your chickens from the creatures that wander outside your home at night? I am writing an article and would love to here your stories for inspiration, and see what different people use as protection.

I live in a very wooded area and I have a fake owl, but I know it does not help much because my chickens were attacked by raccoons. After that incident I improved the chicken run by installing a sheet metal base to the run that goes a foot into the ground and the upper sides and top is covered with welded wire fencing which required strong wooden framing. The 4x4 posts have a concrete base.

Awesome!!!

Living in Alaska we have a few predators lol. Eagles, ravens, fox, ermine, bears etc. We have a 10x10 dog run attached to the 8x8 coop. The coop is sturdy and I'm not worried about their safety in there. We ran 2x4's across the top of the run and covered the run with hog wire. I've lined the outside of the run with large rocks but I've seen no sign of predators yet. We did have a bear in the neighborhood this week so I left the girls in the coop and run (normally they free range during the day)

We have two guard llamas. I built their shelter at the end of the chicken run. Anything that wants to come into the chicken run must go past them. So far no night time losses since the llamas arrival a year and a half ago.

I have considered getting llamas as guard animals if I get goats. I wonder if llamas could scare away raccoons from the goose pen. I suppose they would need to be standing right next to the goose pen to do that.

I think they definitely would keep raccoons away provided they were able to patrol around the pen. I see raccoons frequently on our road but have had no issues with them getting into the chicken coop.
