Chicken Breed Focus - Dorking

Pics
The other day I was taking some wet feed with the vitamin water out to them and when I open the coop door one of the Dorking pullet's ran out into the yard. She stopped right outside of the coop door though, so I lowered the bowl to arouse her curiosity and entice her to get back into the coop. It worked!

Im so excited to get mine next spring 😃

I'm already picking out a coop for my keepers to live in

Make sure the outside of it is secure, because these love to dig right by the sides of the coop and run. Everytime I go back out there I have to fill the hole's back in so something that might dig from the outside won't be able to meet them half way.

Yeah. If I build a coop (I'd prefer cause then it's secure and not as expensive as a tsc coop) I'm going to make a hardwire floor and then cover it with dirt. Are they a bird that prefers to roost if able? I know some birds don't (mostly my bantam Cochin and frizzles refuse to roost)

They can fly up surprisingly well for having such short leg's on them. They also mostly stick together.

Does anyone have Dorking roos living in cold climate? I am concerned about frostbite even with excellent ventilation in my coop. I do not (will not) heat the coop but it is sheltered from prevailing winter winds.

Hello Dorking people,
this is my first year with chickens. I’ve always wanted to have chickens and at 60 yo I’ve finally done it. I chose Dorkings after researching the best tasting dual purpose chicken. They are in a nice Amish coop and I built them a nice sized run. I started with 25 birds And had the others processed in late October. Let me tell you, they are they chickeniest tasting chicken ever had. I can’t let them free range due to the number of predators where I live here in Maine. They are now 8 months old and I’ve been getting about one egg a day. Was hoping I’d have more . One rooster and six hens And they are a source of joy for me.
