Those of you who have battled mites please advise

Yup,and even if you don't actually have thousands you come in the house every night feeling like every inch of you is crawling!

Try Vaseline on the scaly leg mites. I heard that it smothers the little boogers.

Gonna try bag balm.

Go fer it! Annoying little parasites!
Not as bad as other mites, at least they stay on the bird and don't spread too easy.
Have had them since I brought my first flock(adults) home with them, only broody chicks have them bad, couple others just a tad....time to get rid of them.

Could I ask another question? The main reason I think I have mites at this point is that the girls have some bare patches on their stomachs, which I noticed a few days ago when I flipped them over. I am wondering how long it usually takes for feather regrowth to begin happening -- I don't know how else to tell if the mites are under control, because I never see them (after reading Blooie's very helpful description, I went out last night again with a flashlight to look carefully inside the coop and on the birds, including flipping them over and looking at their stomachs, and didn't see any mites). How long is the period between when they lose feathers and when they start growing new ones in, if nothing else is interfering?

If the feathers were broken or chewed off, they will not grow back until the bird goes thru a molt.
When feathers are fully plucked out, like often in a predator grab, they will grow back almost immediately.

Thank you, aart. So, I'm assuming that means that the fact that the stomach remains bare for a while doesn't necessarily indicate that mites are continuing to bother them. I guess the way to tell what's happening, then, would be to monitor what the bare patches themselves look like. Poor girls -- I am constantly flipping them over and peering at them.

I'd just keep going out at night and checking every few days....IF the mites are the kind that only come out at night to feed.

Yes, agreed. I saw the thread about depluming mites, too, and am wondering if that's what's going on. One person said they had success with a sulfur bath, so I might try that.
