Yup,and even if you don't actually have thousands you come in the house every night feeling like every inch of you is crawling!
Try Vaseline on the scaly leg mites. I heard that it smothers the little boogers.

Not as bad as other mites, at least they stay on the bird and don't spread too easy.Go fer it! Annoying little parasites!
If the feathers were broken or chewed off, they will not grow back until the bird goes thru a molt.Could I ask another question? The main reason I think I have mites at this point is that the girls have some bare patches on their stomachs, which I noticed a few days ago when I flipped them over. I am wondering how long it usually takes for feather regrowth to begin happening -- I don't know how else to tell if the mites are under control, because I never see them (after reading Blooie's very helpful description, I went out last night again with a flashlight to look carefully inside the coop and on the birds, including flipping them over and looking at their stomachs, and didn't see any mites). How long is the period between when they lose feathers and when they start growing new ones in, if nothing else is interfering?

When feathers are fully plucked out, like often in a predator grab, they will grow back almost immediately.
Quote: I'd just keep going out at night and checking every few days....IF the mites are the kind that only come out at night to feed.
