Hello! A friend of mine hatched some chicks for me and moved them to my property at around 8 weeks of age. They are around 16 weeks now and I am wondering if one in particular is a hen or a roo.
The one in question is the largest of the dozen, though there are different breeds and mixes in the flock. I haven't heard anyone crow yet, nor have any of my ladies laid an egg. There is another chicken that I am pretty sure is a roo and he is the only other black chicken in the flock, though he is smaller. He has what I believe is a sickle feather showing up and his crest is bright red. The chicken in question has no noticeable sickle feathers forming and it's crest though large is not as bright as the one I believe to be a roo.
I have attached pictures of the one in question including it's tail/saddle feathers and crest as well as 2 pictures of the one I believe to be a rooster (he has the white) for comparison.
With 12 in the flock total I am hoping that only one of them is male! These are my first chickens so I am very inexperienced in telling them apart at this age. Thanks for your time! I'm so glad to have found this site. (PS: Any guess on breed though they are likely mixes would be welcome!)
