Hello, I am new here I just joined. I find these forums to be very helpful and I am hoping that people with a little more experience at being able to tell the gender of croad Langshans and Black Copper Marans, can help me. I have two Langshans and one BCM that I am trying to figure out the sex of because the breeder is having one more hatch in a couple days and I am not sure if I should get any more chicks from this hatch and need to place my order within the next day. If these turn out to be males I will be upset that I didn’t add chicks while I had the chance. I’m aiming for laying hens in both these breeds by next spring rather than starting out with chicks next spring. Can you help tell me if these 9 week old chicks who are almost fully feathered are female or male? PLEASE can you help me!?? 😁

At 9 weeks, they're pullets. Cockerels would have more prominent combs and wattles than this. The first Langham had wierd feathers, I'm puzzled.
Omg thank you! I agree the black one has me stumped too. They are not really long or pointy but they are weirdly shaped almost curly . But do you feel the other two are definitely pullets? The breeder acted like it was too early to tell a week ago but I feel like the are hens. I’m just not experienced at it.

I agree, pullets.

Is it possible the Langham is frizzled? (not sure if this is possible with all breeds or not-just throwing it out there)

No she doesn’t breed frizzled. She just breeds Langshans, Black Copper Marans, Deathlayers , Ameracauna and Olive Eggers. She did tell me a week ago that the Langshans develop slower and to send her pics in a month. That’s fine but she is having a hatch in a few days and I want laying hens by next spring. I don’t want to be having to get chicks in the spring and waiting. So I’m desperately trying to figure these guys out now

At 9 weeks, unless they're much younger than that, they are pullets. :]
I personally wouldn't go back to that breeder, the breed standards aren't being kept up, that doesn't Mean they're not good birds. Frizzles happen in any breed.

Welcome to BYC!
Thank you! The breeder said the Langshans are slow to develop and to send her pics in 4 weeks but that she had a feeling (at that time which was about 2 weeks ago) that they were male. So I’ve been really nervous with those two. The BCM I was pretty sure was female but most people I asked about the Langshans said they didn’t know that breed enough to say for sure. So thank you!!

She’s not frizzled it’s just the way Croad Langshan feathers are. These come from very good lines actually and so do the BCM she’s bred directly from French lines. I think it is just because she’s young that your seeing what looks like a ruffled look. Langshans are very fluffy.
