4 Week Old Black Australorp Gender

P.S. While there are no guarantees with any live animal, for the most part Australorps have a reputation for laid-back males.
Can confirm, my first little guy is awesome, and I had NO clue what I was doing when he came in to my life, so I can take absolutely no credit for his awesomeness

That's a confusing one.

I've occasionally had a fast-maturing hen fool me.

At this point I still can't say for sure.
Thanks for taking a look! Yeah after the initial set of pictures, I thought for sure its a cockerel. But then things slowed. I guess I have some hope then but the waiting game continues! Thanks again. I'll post some updates at some point.

Here is an 8 week update of sprout

We've been through three batches of Australorp babies now, and while we're no experts, and yours certainly is about confusing, we've noticed a distinct difference in eye color between the genders. All of our Australorp girls have gorgeous jet black eyes like your pictures, but the boys have green, red, or yellow. Don't know if this is a true set in stone determining factor across the board. Hope it goes well!

That is interesting that it's worked out that way for your flock! They all really "should" have dark eyes. All five of mine came from the same hatchery, but only two hens have the dark eyes, (two are very light, one sometimes looks darker but really it's not.) So for breeding I have been told to only breed the dark eyed birds.

One of my favorite (unfortunately light-eyed) Australorp hens, Alice.
