Looks like a Sharp Shinned hawk to me.

After consulting my Field Guide, I think you have a Northern Goshawk.

Young female Cooper's hawk and she will tackle chickens 2 to 3 times her size if hungry enough.

According to my Kaufman bird guide, it looks like a juvenile Red Shouldered hawk. Eastern, not California.

Well we have it narrowed down to some kind of Hawk, not a Falcon. Other than that who knows!!

Kaufman guide, juvenile Red Shouldered hawk.

Petersons guide, juvenile Sharp Shinned hawk, or juvenile Coopers hawk, or juvenile Northern Goshawk, or juvenile Red Shouldered hawk, or juvenile Broad Winged hawk. I think they used the same picture for all of them. I guess Petersons guide is history.

Since this young bird is lacking the white band above the eyes, and has multiple barring along the tail I would guess she is a Cooper's Hawk. Excellent photo by the way.
