Follow up: Stopped by Home Depot tonight on the way home from work. They happened to be assembling gas grills for display. They gave me a couple of the shipping boxes for the grills. I just used one to start. It more than doubled the size of the original enclosure. You could tell immediately that the chicks were happier and more relaxed having some space to spread their wings.
