Just received nine female welsummer day old chicks from backyard chicken hatchery -one was deadnext day and onetime following day-so three dead out of nine ordered - I have raised chickens for 15 years and never lost more than one chick in spring shipment-chicken in very warm room 80 degrees with heat lamp where they are and temp there 90 degrees -spoke with their customer service agent today about replacing three dead chicks -I ordered eight and they gave me one-they said that they would only give me credit and not replace two chicks with free shipping -Disappointed with customer service at backyard chicken hatchery -offering credit not enough for losing 1/3 of the new chicks shipped -they should offer to replace dead chicks with free shipping for better customer service- I have raised chickens for 15 years and probably did nothing wrong on my end- the other six chicks are strong and doing well

name of the hatchery is chickens for backyards - disappointed that I lost a third of my order and they only offered credit and not replacement with shipping-

Welcome to BYC! :frow

First sorry for your loss and experience. :hugs

While I agree you probably did nothing wrong on your part.. I also happen to read the policies of the places I order from and most are just that. The hatchery also didn't do anything wrong.

"Q. WHAT IS YOUR SHIPMENT GUARANTEE?
A.
We have an “Arrive Alive” guarantee. We guarantee your ordered number of birds arrive healthy and true to breed. Please contact us immediately should any losses or variances to your order occur. If this happens we can reimburse you or reship your birds if the birds are still available. Reshipments are subject to availability and minimum shipping requirements. If eligible, we will reship only once. Reimbursements are limited to the cost of the birds and will not include shipping charges."

Ultimately not every chick that hatches will make it. Shipping stress is hard on chicks. Routes and weather also breed vigor varries.

Count yourself lucky to have never lost more than 1 chick in previous years shipments.. I've had orders where 14/15 died from My pet chicken..

Still, I'm here to support you adn agree with your sentiment.

Glad your other babies are thriving! :wee

I can't find their npip number, I think they're just a drop shipper. Sorry for your loss.
Agreed... Taken from their site..

What hatchery do you get your chicks from?

We work with several well-known hatcheries that are National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) certified.

I am sorry for your loss. My story is very different. I had a bad experience with chicks I received in the beginning of March from another hatchery. (Another thread) Ordered 6 standard silver laced Cochins from Chickens for Backyards and received them on Wednesday. I was notified on the hatch day early that afternoon with a tracking number, something I never received from the other hatchery. Their site even explained not to fret if not seeing the package move within the postal system. But of course I did. Any dealings with customer service I found pleasant and informative. A call from my P.O. before 7am and had a box twice the size of the one I had received the previous 12 chicks in. A heat pad was placed in the box something not present in the last box of chicks along with a packing slip and care instructions again not received from previous hatchery. Chicks were bright eyed and ready to eat. I will plan to order again next spring from Chickens for Backyards. I am more than pleased with my experience.
