I'm hoping for a 'garden variety' of Bredas. I have a blue 'roo which will go in with 2 blue hens, 2 splash, 1 black split/mottle & 2 mottled. Should be interesting to see what falls out in the way of mottleds.

Chris told me if my black roo and my cuckoo hen have chicks they will be sex linked so i can tell if males or females

Is chicken danz waltzs ark?

chicken danz is in KS and waltz's ark is in CO -- two entirely separate breeders in two different states.

As you may remember the Blue cockerel that was mis-sent to me by waltz's died recently at a little over two yrs old - we aren't zoned for roos so we re-homed him w/ a farm friend who adored him as their indoor-outdoor pet.

RFR's Blue Breda pullet was our first Breda and we had her for 1-1/2 yrs when she died suddenly in her sleep in her mid-day snooze. RFR was also the first breeder that I came across that mentioned they were puzzled at why their Blue roos had difficulty living past 2 yrs and just dropping over dead for no apparent reason. That's what happened to waltz's Blue roo we gave to our friend -- suddenly dead for no apparent reason at a bit over 2 yrs.

I had two more Blue pullets from chicken danz but lost both before POL. chicken danz has a breeding project to strengthen hardiness in the BBS Breda and I'm looking forward to getting her birds in future. She's the top breeder in KS and very knowledgeable about genetics and breeding. I wouldn't mind one from boskelli1571 too. Shoot! Wish I could have a giant flock of Breda in every color they come in!!!!!

I would say at this point it still may be the Breda's best hope to have some cross-breeding to get different genetic hardiness into them and breed back for type. This is such a precious breed in absolutely so many ways!

ME - it's interesting to compare notes on breeders. I can say w/o reservation that the healthiest Bredas I have got have been from Chicken Danz - wtg Verna!
The birds I will be breeding next year are a mix of her birds and the two older hens I got from a friend.
Like you, my mottled hens have died off one by one. I have two left so I will throw them into the mix as well.

Thank you so much. I hadn't checked in here for awhile. I have been working with my Bredas to improve their hardiness and it seems to be paying off. I have quite a crew of girls available right now. I was only using one rooster for the past several months. I had grown a nice blue one up to breeding size but my current rooster managed to cause him to break his neck while arguing with him. I just put a young cockerel in the pen with them in hopes that the older boy would get used to him before he was sexually mature. I had done that with the current rooster and both he and the other boy got along just fine.
I'm working on a mix of breeds right now, mostly based on the LaFleche to breed into some of the current Bredas the current Bredas to recreate the Breda and develop hardier immune systems deleting the chance of avian leukosis. My current breeders seem to be doing very well and I haven't lost any girls for quite some time that I kept for myself. My problem is that many of the other breeds that should be carrying the combless gene are also showing a a V comb. It's going to be difficult to breed that out of them.
I do have a few girls that are upwards to 7-8 years old. I don't think they lay any more but I have no idea really. My "house chicken" One Wing, a black Breda is around 5 and she lays for short periods every now and then. I culled all of my black Breda in my breeder pen because they seemed to be a weak link. However since then, I've produced some black chicks. So much for the BBS rules! I have one black girl that has just started laying well. So the black has been reintroduced.
Speaking of La Fleche, I've come to love that breed as well. They are to say the least a terrible layer!!! but they have similar personalities to Breda and you can definitely see their influence.

Hope everyone has a good New Year! Onward and forwards! Getting ready to watch the Rose Parade. It's only 10 miles away but attended the parade ONCE and never again, thank you! Much better watching all cozy and warm at home LOL! Wonder if there'll be any chickens on any of the floats this year?!
