I consider Buff Orpingtons to be the superior homesteading chicken. I love how well they lay, their massive size, and their broodiness!! Go Buffs!

Sex is determined by wattlles and combs usually by 6 weeks of age.

The funny thing about my rooster is that He has taught himself a trick. He stands about 6-8 inches in front of me and catches pieces of bread that I toss to him in mid air, breaks them up and gives them to his hens. Now the hen's have watched him and cut out the middle man, catching their own treats. I've noticed that Buffs seem to really enjoy interacting with people more than the other breeds of birds in my flock. Their willingness to learn tricks is just a bonus.
I have been teaching my BO's tricks forever. I don't have any right now, only ISA browns. But I have 27 BO's coming next month...25 pullets and 2 cockerels. This is a pic of one of their tricks... :)
