Bumblefoot vs Neomycin: a Backyard Study

I eventually tried Epsom salt soaks doing a 45-60 minute soak on each hen and wrapping the foot with antibiotic ointment. That did nothing. Didn’t even loosen the plug. Now I’m at the beginning of week 2 for trying the antibiotic Baytril 2.5% orally Injected. I got it from allbirdproducts.com So far I’ve not seen any significant improvement.

Baytril should be more effective against staph than sulfadiazine. I think that was the right move, and I'm sorry it's taking so long to see an improvement.

It's a long shot, but if you have family or friends who have some old topical Mupirocin or other staph-fighting antibiotic lying around that they'd be willing to sacrifice to vet care, that might benefit your hardest-hit bird (especially if you decide to manually remove the bumble).

I wish you luck and your birds a full recovery!

I would like to share my experience with you. I am new to poultry this year, have had my quail for about eight months now and have gone through a very long treatment for bumble foot.

my girl had a bad infection but continued to get worse, I had her on antibiotics for over two months - the vet I took her to insisted that He could treat her non-surgically and he prescribed a very strong dose of Baytril - orally also.
very little improvement- then he did another course of very strong amoxicillin. I am results, no improvement. At this point she had had the infection for 4months and I knew that if I did not get it out soon it would probably go into her bones and kill her.
she was still walking, eating and laying eggs.
I had to do surgery and have attached pics. Got out very large kernels, small kernels and stringy infection. After months on antibiotics, I am convinced that nothing would have helped her besides just getting the infection out. That may be where your quail is at as well.

I have never done surgery before but are used gloves, disinfected every thing, scalpel and wrapped after. She has healed up very well the last six weeks. Now that her swelling has gone down I do unfortunately feel one more kernel of infection, I will be getting out today. I don’t want to leave any infection in her foot. I hope this is helpful for yours. If I had been more experienced, this was my first time dealing with bumble foot by the way, I would’ve cut her a lot sooner.
