Calico Cochin Thread

Pics
They are so beautiful! Love the pair in the first picture. Did you hatch them from eggs from someone on BYC? All four of my calicos are boys (of course) but they're so sweet. I'll be taking some pictures of them this weekend. They're 2 months.

Thank you,
The parents are from a breeder here in Gig Harbor, WA.
I believe the Hen was eggs she hatched from MSBEAR, then I bought her.
The rooster was one that I hatched from eggs from the Gig Harbor breeder's eggs... if that makes sense LOL.

Breeding in a bantam white Cochin won't help as they are recessive. You will just get dark Mille Fleurs unless you can find a dominant white breeder.
Breed in your lightest yellow Mille Fleurs and you will be able to work your way toward calicos and you can use a hysterical Mottled to help the cause. But be patient because it will take you a while. And I do mean a long while! this is not a project for 2 years. And don;t forget to keep the type there as you work on color.
Most of the chicks shown on this thread will grow up darker than what they look like as kids. After the first mature molt the roos will be much darker. The hens may stay light or even get lighter but roos darken.
Do not consider yourself to have calicos unless they are over a year old and look calico.

This was a true working calico roo that I could have used. He was pure MF breeding but a fluke. Unfortunately, he did not develop a socket on his pelvis and was lame so I put him down.

There are many great starts to the calicos out there but beware if you buy them as chicks since you may get some off colored or just bad patterned MFC as they mature. And if you buy eggs make sure the parents you see are over a year old in photos or person before you decide they are calicos.

I look forward to watching this thread and see what everyone has or produces.
Can you help explain to me what a "true working calico" is or the significance of this particular rooster?

I have been working towards a Calico colored Large Fowl project, and this most recent batch of chicks had a few that were colored EXACTLY like this rooster! I've brought in the color from a Bantam hen and have been breeding towards larger stock for several generations. But I didn't see any in this color pop up until this year! I just saw this photo of your rooster and my jaw dropped! That's EXACTLY the weird color we've been getting! Can you tell me what it is?

White bodies, reddish heads, and we can't figure out what it means? Please help! I just lost the rooster that I had marked like this, but my friend has several roosters and hens marked like this, but we can't make heads nor tails of what this means. It's coming out of our heavily marked Calico (mottled) birds. Thanks!!!!

I wish you all would just STOP this talk!! You have me wanting some calico cochins too! Life's not fair!! LOL
