Can a Rooster live on his own?

Certainly.
Men at times live with no female "companionship" and we do just fine. Maybe a little grumpy, but we live.
This being said remember the golden rule.
Do unto others as you would wish to have done to your self.
The rooster would most definatly be happier with at least one hen. Given his own devices he would prefer a harem.

AWWWWW, poor little guy, get him some wives.

You don't say if alone meant alone in the coop and run or alone outside free range.

In the coop yes but lonely outside, the buzzards would get him, poor guy..
