can anyone identify this fish?

Maybe he read your mind?

Really, he doesn't want to know what goes on in my mind. I say it's either a mosquito fish or a guppy. I do know that it's female and it's going to give birth soon...

My thought is, since the Mosquito fish is a native species, and the guppy is not, odds are, it's a Mosquito fish. Guppies have been introduced into other areas, but they are a tropical species, and their survival is doubtful in areas where the temperatures get into the 40's or lower. In this situation, I think the guppy is a bit of a "zebra." A male would be a dead giveaway, since the females of the two species look very similar, but the males are distinctly different.

I would vote mosquito fish too, but I am not a fish expert (just squid). A fish expert said to really tell the difference you would need to count scales and look at fin rays... both can have that black mark near the anal fin, both are live bearers.
