Can chickens eat whole oats?

I give mine a handful of rolled oats every morning, they love it!!!

Mine get hulled oats on a regular basis, and occasionally they get micronised and steamed oats.

We recently bought 100 lb. of whole oats to supplement our alpacas' winter vittles and decided to try the chickens and guineas on it. They loved it, hulls and all. We went a step further this week. The gf has started fermenting their chicken feed, and she is mixing it 1/3 oats and 2/3 feed before adding the water. The birds are eating it like it is going out of style! Their feed tray looks almost freshly washed when they are done.

I do not know if dry whole oats would swell up in their stomachs or not, but the process we are using soaks the oats for a few days; so, they have probably already become saturated with water by the time the birds get them.
