Can you keep one hen and one rooster

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Can you tell I'm new at this?
I just want my rooster to be happy but I want to make sure I don't make the hen miserable.
I'll keep looking for more hens but I'd hate to lose this one if I don't have to.
I was looking for any breed of hens but I really do love the Rhode Island Reds and they are so hard to find here.

Where do you live? I call mine Texas Reds.

I live too far away from you but thank you for asking. (Nova Scotia)
I picked up the hen.
Now how should I introduce them?
The man said to call him tomorrow and if the other woman doesn't show up, I can buy some more.
We named her Lola, she had to run a few errands with us.
What a pretty girl.

His place looked and smelled great.
The animals all looked really well taken care of and healthy.
Should I quarantine Lola for awhile?

In most situations, the hen should be quarantined to make sure she doesn't give anything to the roo. But this seems strained. It's a tough call, but it's your call. I would, however, check her over. Give her the mites/lice check-up and see that she's not sneezing, etc.

When they meet, I would keep both of them separated through some sort of caging for a while and watch. They should not have any problems. If there's no squabbling, consider the pecking order in the process of being established.

Thank you.
I'll bring her out to the coop in the little cage now.

I hope this works and they are happy.
Will he try and mate with her right away?
I hear that looks scary.

Lol, the scary factor depends on the the rooster. For the sake of mentioning, I notice that roos will be less 'breeding-crazy' when they're not around other males. They won't be as threatened.

I cannot speak as for the first mating. That'll depend on him.

Thanks for "walking" me through this.

It has been about three hours that they have been together with bars separating them. (Lola is in a kennel by the coop)
The rooster seems interested but is also just going about his regular routine.
Lola the hen is just laying down in the kennel.
They made a few noises back and forth but nothing that sounded scary.
I put a "buffet" of yummies in the main coop.
Do you think I should let Lola in with the roo yet?

I would think he may give the hen a hard time....having his way with her all the time. I dunno though, never been in that situation.
Have you tired craigslist? There are always chickens on there!

This is all I see on Craigslist.
Unless I'm not looking in the correct section.
