My team in New Guinea bought a Dwarf cassowary from a private owner that was keeping it as a pet. It lost a foot to a snare trap, but had healed and was still able to move quite quickly. This is may be the first time a Dwarf Cassowary has ever been released back to the wild. We plan more releases like this in the future. Currently another Cassowary is being held in Meruke, New Guinea.

Wow, welcome to BYC!

Years ago, we had a U.S. member who had pet cassowaries. I have posted a couple of clips about kiwis.

You are the first PNG cassowary person, and most welcome among us ratite enthusiasts.

[I had a rothschildi emu Dad here with a clutch of five. Found an audio clip of a cassowary chick cheeping -- it thought it was lost -- in a Townsville, QLD, backyard. So I played the clip to Dad and his chicks. As soon as the clip began, all six jerked their heads up, looking around for the chick they could hear.]
