I replied to a thread I posted about mice. I used the word cr_p (if this gets change think of the game at the casino with dice around a big table). When I reviewed my reply it was changed to crud. No problem, I changed it to poop and my meaning was the same. Not a problem, I just thought it kinda sensative.
What do others think?

there's ALOT of young kids on here. or kids that are reading over their parent's shoulder. so yes, this site is pretty sensitive.

Yes, there is auto censor on some words that are part of the site. It does all the funny changes automatically to try to keep the site kid safe. K-5 type safe.

I can see the reasoning, and I guess the line had to be drawn somewhere. My kid is way grown up, so I've been ot of the loop for a while. I guess back in the day we didn't protect kids from reality quite so much. Times change.

Thats just not a word I wouldn't use in front of my grandchildren and I thought I was strict about the language around kids.
Thanks for your responses. We live in a society where our kids are fighting and dying for this thing called freedom, yet we as a society keep making rules to restrict freedom. Curious?

Personally I don't see freedom, not even freedom of speech, as the same thing as ability to post swear words (or some topics) on a forum. Maybe that's just me but as you said, 'your house, your rules' and the tradition here is to be kid friendly. I'm the worst example, well typing I'm better, but in person I'm not up to this board’s standards at all. As for how I moderate here I kind of go with what I think the average kindergarten teacher would accept. She (or He) is the one that has to accept all kids, and find the balance between the wishes of all parents in the matter, and the history of the kids upbringing so far comes to roost! So yes, here there is some words that are automatically changed, but as has been seen not all wrong words can be entered, if it's part of other words it messes up posts. Think 'backside' and Massachusetts being in someone's profile.....

I think they were much more protected in life years ago than they are now. I was born in the mid 1950's. I remember what it was like "before". Have you watched television lately? Nothing like that on when I was growing up, thank goodness! But, this isn't life, this is a msg board and we have to be mindful of youngsters who are members here. I've seen other boards and would not allow my sons to belong to those, if I was still raising them today. On this board, however, I would feel confident that they would learn and grow and interact without learning gravely inappropriate things or being exposed to the scuzz I see on other boards. Although I personally wouldnt have included that particular word you mentioned on the censor list unless it was the substitute for a far worse one, I don't feel it adds one whit to their character or personal growth to hear/see/read low-class language. JMHO. So, we have the rules.

I am apart of a forum that would change swear words into types of food other silly things. Use you imagination as to what these words really mean. fork (as in 'what the fork' ((I'll actually use this one in RL when I'm around little kids)) ), mother hubbard, crepe, asparagus, any many more you never know what that site will filter it is pretty funny.

I think freedom of speech and censorship are two different things when the thing censored in this case is the use of words in a language, not ideas.

There are good and bad ways to bring across the same idea, and word choice in a kid friendly private run forum is a small detail that is monitored out of respect to young ear. Of course they can hear it all and worse daily, but this is one less place they need to adsorb it from.

Hi AdoptedByaChicken, I made the comment about freedom in reference to life in general, not necessarily this board. Thats why I said initially your house your rules. I really don't consider the word I used to be cursing. I would use it in front of my 2 year old grandaughter. If we were talking about the f word the b word etc., I would be completely in agreement even though they are just sounds, but thats another discussion. Lets try a quote from a religious book and see what happens.... Mary rode upon an ass with Joseph walking beside her. I used the Massachusetts word.
The moderator team here does a great job of keeping this board civil, which I learned early. I have been on boards were the flaming gets so bad people actually get so worked up they try to find the others location to go beat them up. It got so bad on one board the board died in a few months. I like this way much better and if that means I have to call what comes out of a chickens backside as marble sized balls of poo poo I guess its a small price to pay.

Hi SpeckeledHen, Thats not exactly how I ment protect, and I don't know that protect described my thought exactly. You and I are close I was born in 49, in respect to what you bring up I couldn't agree more. Maybe thats what I'm trying to say... On one hand society shows sexual stuff on TV that would have been to much for Playboy in our day; and on the other hand the word I used is changed. Seems like two extremes, I guess I like the middle.
You said "I don't feel it adds one whit to their character or personal growth to hear/see/read low-class language". Couldn't agree more. There is a language you use when your with "the boys" and one you use with the general public, thats one of the things that defines maturity.

Corey, A rose by any other name will not smell so sweet.

You know in reality it just a word. Who originally got to decide what words are considered bad? There was a comedian in the 70 that had a skit about words, can't remember his name. It was funney.

Silkiechicken: Yea I wasn't trying to beat the freedom of speech drum. I was talking more in generalities. "There are good and bad ways to bring across the same idea" who gets to decide which is good and which is bad. On this forum the moderators do, and thats the way it should be, but in real life ???

I hope everyone understands that I'm not complaining, or demanding my rights. I actually like the idea of changing offensive words. I just never noticed it before. I now know that here its poo poo and in a Casino its (lets see if this works) C R A P S .

Well, actually, Bob, I speak the same no matter who I'm with. I have a hard time switching gears like that, LOL. And I myself have no objection to the word in question that started your thread, not sure why it's censored, but hey, no big deal. There are other words to use, right?
