Our two Buff Orpingtons, Henrietta and Pumpkin, are getting along in years so we decided that we will add two more Silver-laced Wyandottes to the flock. This gave us an opportunity to upgrade our also aging coop, and add an automatic chicken door.
I bought the basic coop and door from Amazon. These coops look nice, but are flimsy, so I reinforced key joints and added wood where needed. I also built a box upon which the coop sits, giving the girls more room and shade. To accommodate the door I had to build another box that extended the run.
The door is Brinsea Chicksafe Eco. I hade to send the first one back as it did not work. The new one works.
I applied several coats of waterproof stain inside and out to help weatherproof it. Only time will tell!
Our yard is small, but the upgraded coop fits nicely.
