Wolves will kill anything that moves if they have the opportunity and especially coyotes, fox, and dogs. Wolf packs will stake out a territory and mark it and defend it from competitors and trespassers which is what they consider these other canines. You see it all the time here in MT. Once the wolves move in coyotes, etc. disappear. Wolves have killed many Lion hunting dogs here and it is a very gruesome site. They hone in on them if they come into the wolfs territory chasing a lion and kill every one of them. Wolves kill just to kill. So I don't ever see where a wolf will breed with a coyote, dog, etc. in the wild, even a lone wolf. A lone wolf that has left a pack will be out looking to start another pack and stake new territory and the first thing they will do in their new territory is kill or run off their competitors(coyotes, etc.). I believe this "coywolf" thing is just a big coyote or a domestic hybrid let run wild. Coyotes differ greatly in appearance and genetics all over the U.S.
I trapped a big black female wolf in February this year using only coyote urine as the attractant. A trapper from Alaska told me he uses even domestic dog urine to attract them and it works because they consider any canine as a trespasser and competitor invading their territory and are going to hone in on them and remove them from their area.

This was in my backyard today. It is a wolf or a coyote? I couldn't zoom in anymore so the picture is not the greatest.

depending on where you live it might be both. coywolves are now all over the Midwest. PBS had a special on them last month. worth watching. It showed how coyotes mated with wolves in Canada about 80 years ago and have spread south and west. Had them running around central park in NYC.

Coyote or Wolf?? Both, its a Coywolf hybrid. (according to PBS) Most of the Coyotes east of the Mississippi have Wolf genetics in them now.
These coy wolves you keep referring to are nothing but coyotes with some wolf genetics from who knows how long ago. These animals are predominantly coyote. The only animal I would call a coywolf is a first generation cross of the 2 species which isn't common in the wild especially in areas with gray wolves who will not tolerate coyotes in their area, they will kill them or run them off.

From what I've read, Coyotes in different parts of the USA have different genetic makeup. Eastern coyotes have more wolf gene, and southern coyotes have less. I think it's about the mating opportunities while population expansion happened...wolves do kill coyotes while both live in an area. Coyotes who go after your dog will do so when they are raising pups, so springtime is more dangerous for your dog.

Anyway...I live in the Adirondacks and have seen coyotes who resemble wolves. They can get to 65-70 lbs here, according to people who hunt.

My chickens live in Fort Knox, and don't free range when other food resources are scarce. They hate the snow anyway.

That is a coywolf it is not a wolf or a coyote its a red algonquin aka eastern wolf mixed with coyote blood. They are all over here in toronto probably in the thousands. TRUE wolves of north america have trouble living near humans the prey they need isnt enough here. THey might pass by after leaving a pack but thats it. We think we have a lot of deer it isnt enough to sustain wolves. COywolves will eat rats, cats, small dogs, garbage, and much better at handling human building. When construction happens they just go in and eat pets lol I have seen dogs kill them though so they are really wary. Thing is they can go sneak around in the dark and you wont know they are there. I am in canada. IN SOUTH part of america when i lived there i noticed coyotes that looked dog like. Probably feral dogs and coyotes might mix a bit. These arent issue for me though.

That is a coyote just my 02 cents.I have been hunting coyotes for the past 15 years yes they will take your pets if left un attended.Make loud noise and try to scare them off they are more afraid of you than you think.Do you live in wolf country? Good luck
