Dumpster Diving-Garage Sale-Goodwill-Thrift Store & Craigslist Finds

I live near a transfer station and my grandson takes my junk there once a week and looks around to see what's good to bring home.in the past 2 years he's gotten 4 of these trimmers. One is a four cycle, and three 2 cycles you can change heads on. One came with a mini roto tiller.

I posted that I wanted egg cartons on a Facebook online garage sale for my area...a nice lady saved a whole bunch for me. For her trouble, I gave her zucchini from my garden. We both walked away happy!

Good deal! I should see what I can trade for sugar snap peas, with the unusually cool summer so far they've been producing like mad.

My most recent thrift store find.
Unlike my other pieces, this is a reproduction (not genuine mother of pearl inlay), and it has a bit of damage, but it will match the rest of my set nicely and the yellow accent matches our Korean bed set.

I also managed to find another little Homer Laughlin plate, slowly piecing together my mis-matched dinner set. <3

Also added to my bad habit: More iced tea spoons. I need an intervention about these spoons...

Another great find at the dump. Last month my grandson brought home a craftsman chain saw. big and dirty. I tried starting it but there wasn't any spark, checked mag with tester and it didn't throw a spark. It rained today so I did my list of rainy day jobs, got done and wondered what else I could do. Spotted the chain saw, got some tools and took it apart. I have never seen a saw as dirty as this one. I clean mine when I'm done using it, but this one looked like it had never been cleaned. I chased the spark plug wire under a couple of panels until I found the magneto, it was completely packed with wood chips, I took it off and could see right away what was wrong. The pick up coils were packed with wood goo, I scraped them off cleaned the coils with sandpaper, and now have a very nice running chain saw.

Awesome that you saved that from the landfill! We had a similar find. My fiancé found a 20 year old Stihl at the flea market, VERY DIRTY, but still in great shape!

It looks great, not seeing the damage! How much was it?

The damage is on the base, so we added a board under it to level it.
The pricing on pieces like this is all over the place. The genuine pieces in Korea are very cheap usually, even though they don't make them any more (new laws on harvesting, using and exporting mother of pearl). The repros in Korea are mid-range, in the USA the repros are outrageously priced. This piece was "fair" for US pricing at $300 (tried to get the thrift shop to lower it, but no luck. But I sold off a bunch of stuff to cover it. Any big purchase I make, I sell off a bunch of things to balance it out.) But my antique, genuine mother of pearl set from Korea... Three pieces for 120 total. There is a few other repro pieces on craigslist here, probably brought over by military. But they want waaaay more than I could manage. I've considered contacting them to see if they'd consider partial trade for it though.

@3forfree What a great find! I really should start visiting the local dumps / scrap yards and having a look.

We found a local place we can get salvaged wood and building materials (like hinges and such) for free. You should check with local fencing and clean up companies. Some will let people take the salvage rather than ditching it at the dump.

This thread has been idle for a while, time to add something new!

My fiancee was in Arkansas for a job interview (6 hours from home) and the under-the-sink water filter hose popped off and flooded his apartment! Well, now there's concrete floors and we needed a few rugs. Area rugs are so expensive ($75-$150)!

He found one (45" x 66") for $4 at a garage sale. We also got a FREE hallway rug that was left by tenants in his father's rent house.

Both needed cleaning, so my resourceful fiancee used the c-clamps (that he picked up at a flea market 3 for $2!) to fix them onto the fence. Then, we hosed them down with a pressure nozzle on a garden hose and scrubbed them with soap and a broom (and had some fun squirting each other with water on this hot day in Texas). The area rug looks much cleaner and smells better. Hallway rug still smells like dogs...guess we'll have to scrub it again or use some pet carpet cleaner on it.
