Dust bathing question

If the chickens havent been out there yet, they will dig up enough so it will dry out. I have very little dirt, mostly clay and rocks and they have dug deep enough that you can hardly see them when they are in it. With all the people that dust chicken bottoms on this site I find it extremely satisfying to see the dust and DE fly when they do their thing in the pit. I couldnt put it on them better if I tried. Just watch them, you'll be surprised what they can do!

you mean you put sand inside the coop area ?

I have only pine shavings . Should I add sand or anything else ?

My babes are 3 weeks old and just figured out dust baths for the first time yesterday. It was very funny to watch how comatose they get, such is their state of excitement! It's amazing how far down they can dig, plus how filthy they get. They LOVE it.

I said to my BF, "their dust baths are really cute now but somehow I suspect that it won't be so funny in a couple of months and they're digging up the veggie garden".
