I always scrape out my dishes before adding more FF and the chickens act like it's the greatest treasure ever at free ranging time when they come upon a pile of not fresh FF sitting out in the hot sun. Nasty.

I'm not saying that book knowledge trumps experience, but of what I have learned about fermentation is that it is an organism's back up to using energy when oxygen is not available. And when this thread was popular everybody said to keep the feed covered with at least an inch or two of water. But hey to each his own.

I put out my first batch of FF yesterday evening and when I came home from work it was all gone. So I put more out about double the amount tonight. Should they be eating that much?

Were you concerned about how much they were eating when you were giving them dry? Usually, they tank up on it, then, after they get settled into a routine, you'll see them cutting back.

How long is it good for for before you have to make new stuff

I alternate 2 buckets, feeding out one complete bucket every day, so that each bucket is about 48 hours old.

So don't let it stay in their feed container for more than 2 days and replace it with new stuff?
