I woke up extra early (again. I work second shift hours) and waited for the phone call from the post office. 6am rolls around....nothing. 6:30, 6:45 and finally 7:00 rolls around. Still nothing. So I called my post office thinking maybe they just hadn't had a chance to call. Nope, no baby geese.
They hatched on Monday, shipped Tuesday morning and I was starting to get worried about them. So when McMurray opened, I called. They said that according to the tracking number, they had left Wichita at 7:47 am.
Think they might have gone to Hutchinson, I called that post office. No, they only get a truck from Wichita at 5:00 am.
So, where were my babies?
I called McMurray's back and the lady doubled checked and yes it said they had left Wichita. She gave me the tracking number and I drove to my local post office and asked the post master lady to help and explained the situation. She immediately said, "I'll help you find them. They're going to need water soon."
So she printed out the tracking for them and called Wichita. After some confusion, it was discovered that although they arrived in Wichita in plenty of time, someone decided not to put them on the truck bound for my post office and instead later (at 7:47am) scanned them as departed when in fact they were waiting for the next truck, which wouldn't have brought them until tomorrow morning.
Knowing they were running out of time to be in a box without food and water, I made the 240 mile round trip to pick them up myself.
As soon as I got them in the car, I offered them water. They drank and drank and drank and drank.
I stopped halfway home to offer more water and a little food. Again they drank like crazy, nibbled the food and then drank like crazy some more.
Once we were home, I put them in their outside play pen for a little while so they could eat some green if they wanted (also picked and put some grass in since there isn't much actual grass under the tree by the patio) and sat with them for a long time while they tested the greens, played in the water, drank, nibbled food and experimented with zooming around on their little legs.
And oh, my, gosh! They have completely stolen the hearts of everyone in the household.
I tried sexing them (after watching the Metzer vid several times) since I have straight run. Either I did it wrong (most likely), or I have all girls.
Anyway, without further ado, here are Mavis, Myrtle, and Mable.
After a long while when they started looking like they were tuckered out, we put them in their round pen in the shed with all of the windows open so they are safe from predators but still get lots of breeze. It's about 97 degrees today so I won't turn their light on until later.
