Your sword looks a little heavy for fencing and the etching/decoration makes me think it is more of a ceremonial sword. It also looks military with that type of metal scabbard/sheath/holder/whatever it's called with the metal loops. Who knows if that was original to the sword in the first place, though. There should be some markings on it somewhere... some initials stamped in, some sort of makers mark, numbers. Look it over really good since those are some of the best clues. There also might be something missing off the end of the handle. The nut holding the handle on is usually hidden under some sort of decorative covering or even wrapped in leather. It's very cool looking. Does Robert have it up on his wall yet?
