Heat Lamps- Suspended or Sitting

Should I suspend my heat lamp from something or sit it on something? I have a cardboard brooder (for 12 ducklings) and I'm getting them soon, but what do i do with the heat lamp? I dont want a fire-hazard or anything like that, but nothing really to suspend it from unless i build something. Help? and Thanks.

I used reinforced half inch metal hardware cloth so that it could not bend - and placed that across the top of the brooder, but ours were plastic and metal, not cardboard. And I placed the heat lamps on top of those. I had three, so that I could adjust the amount of heat.
