HOOSIERS Only - INDIANA - Ru1?

The Milton swap on Mother's Day weekend is always a good place. That's just over the river from Madison, so it's in Kentucky and requires pullorum-typhoid testing. Where in central Indiana are you? You can call the Indiana Poultry Association and they will notify testers in your county so that they can contact you if they have the antigen. Generally the testing is pretty cheap. If you're near me, I can help as soon as I finish my recertification and get some antigen, which should be in the next couple of weeks.
White's flea market at Brookville is on Wednesday mornings and usually has a great turnout.
Knightstown livestock auction is on Saturday mornings; Amity's is on Tuesday evenings.
In May and June there is a swap at Knox in northern Indiana; also in northern Indiana is the Wolf Lake swaps. You can usually find the dates by typing the swaps in a search in BYC.
There's another flea market in Indiana a couple of times a month but I can't remember the name of it; LAMom knows if she remembers which one I'm talking about--I think it's not too far from her, but I could be mistaken.
I'm sure that folks know of others also.
I know about getting too many cocks. I always wonder why Nature planned it that way as more hens are needed for propagation! Somewhere I read a post by someone who swears that if you keep your incubator set a little below the magic 99.5 that you will hatch more pullets. I have no idea whether that works,

but I'm willing to try it.

please let me know about the incubator temp settings if it does work for more pullets. I also hatch more roosters. So much that out of 24 eggs I only got 6 pullets. This is why I am in need of some more silkie hens or pullets .

Wow, I guess there are quite a few around Indiana. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I actually live in a small town, Middletown. I live 5 miles outside of Anderson (Right down from the Hoosier Park Racing and Casino). That's about 25 miles north of Indianapolis.

If I'm understanding your post, I need to get my animals tested - then I would be able to take them to swaps and auctions, correct?

And if I don't, there's very little I can do to sell them here and there. Am I following you the right way??

I would love for you to do the testing for me, but I looked at Google maps and you're about 80 miles away (2 hour drive or so).

What does it take to get certified for the testing? What does the testing allow (shipping of day-old chicks, egg shipping, etc.)?

I've been doing quite a bit of research about local areas to buy poultry.

It seems that there isn't anywhere around to buy chicks except the local Tractor Supply or Rural King. Even there, you can't buy turkeys or guineas. I would love to be able to hatch and give people a place to purchase his or her poultry. I figured I could take a few orders (straight-runs only) if that works better. I know when I was looking to buy guinea keets - NO ONE around here had them. I ended up driving 2 hours to get them from Snoozin' Goose Ranch outside of Bloomington. Seth, the owner, was a HUGE help.

My DH and I have been looking into what all would go into turning our "hobby" into bringing in more money. I'm just stretching out my feelers to see how it goes. We sell our chicken eggs for a few dollars a dozen. Other than that, we've not sold any of our chickens/turkeys/guineas. I've never hatched anymore than I can keep myself - and have always had plans for where the extra chickens go.

We have White Rocks - which are great duel purpose birds. We usually hatch 50 or so, replenish our hens, and take the roosters to a butcher.

I hope this makes sense. I just don't want to end up with a whole bunch of birds that I don't have the room for.

I NEED MORE GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS!!!

all the farm stores here in kokomo area and logan and peru sell turkeys and such Rural king is one of them that does. You don't have to have them tested to sell from your own place and I don't know about sell barns. I don't think you do and if you would it is then up to the sale barn. I have no idea on selling at poultry shows as we don't sell or even show our birds except for 4H only. If you call the sale barns or auctions they can tell you . My daughter shows in 4H and they test ours a week before the fair for free. They have to be tested or you can't show.

At shows most of them only let you sell if you are also showing. Then there is a $25 fee to sell outside or $3 a cage for inside sale cages.

There is Croycreeks traders fair in Brazil, you do not have to test your birds to sell there, They charge $3 per person to get in, wether you are buying or selling.

Also Veedersburg sale barn on friday nights.

Wantah is not that far about one hour! I have been there a few times!!

My petting zoo currently has: 2 fainting goats, one potbellied pigs, 3 rabbits, 4 hermit crabs, 2 Jack Russels, a few pond fish, about 35 chicks, one bantam hen, and 2 turkey poults! Plus my husband and 3 boys ( ages 7, 2, and 1)

Most farm stores sell turkeys and guineas, some by special order only, Orcheleners (spelling may be off) they are half way between Bloomington and Elletsville and they have other locations in Indiana, carries guineas, I saw some there last week. Dinky's I do not be live require testing to sell and they usually have guineas they may not have all varieties but you still might find some there.

Quote: You only need to have your birds tested if you're taking them to a meet out of state. If you live in Milton KY you don't have to have your birds tested for that swap. But if you live across the river in Madison, you do--crazy, huh? That's why I did the bloodtesting class, so that I could be sure that I can go out of state. The Indiana Poultry Association has the classes twice a year at Jasper and West Lafayette. They're $50 and good for 3 years, then you can do recertification online and go to the extension office for the test. The most expensive part is the antigen; I'm always hoping to get someone to share a bottle with me. They come in bottles of 1000 doses for about $100--no way will I use all that before it expires. When I test for someone I charge 25 cents a bird to pay for the supplies and gas money if I have to travel.

I should have keets this summer. I have lavenders and pieds, which will produce pied, pearl, or white. Also will have eggs if you want to hatch your own. They haven't started laying yet.

My husband was from Alexandria and I've had inlaws in Anderson, Daleville, and Muncie, so am familiar with your area.
The sale areas for the Gateway show are $3 each for inside coops and $25 for outside setup. The Columbus show will charge $2 for inside coops and $5 for outside setup. My plan is to have a couple of sale coops at Bloomington and a couple plus outside setup at Columbus. I don't think that you have to be an exhibitor to have outside setup at Columbus.

Croy's Creek--I knew that LAMom would know what I was talking about!

Ok, so I make sure I understand (gosh, I feel very ignorant
hmm.png
)... Do they have coops already set up that you pay for? What does the "outside setup" consist of? Or do we bring our own animals in their cages and make our own coop/setup? I really do appreciate everyone's help. I'm still trying to learn everything I can about everything I can about chickens.
