YALL, I might be getting a horse FINALLY. We’ve been offered an even trade, our lawnmower for an Arabian mare (as funny as that is😆) she’s about 14 yrs old and will be my first horse ever. I hope we get her, we have the infrastructure in place already (4 acre pasture and a cozy stall in a massive barn) and no shortage of hay.
That's awesome.

What are the uses for horses?
I know that they're pets, you can ride them, ect. but I don't see much practical use for them. They're big, have to have a nice stable, eat lots of food, have little accessories like brushes and saddles, have to get re-shoed every month or so, have to be brushed daily, have lots of time spent with them, and more stuff I don't know about because I've never had one.

I’m not saying I hate winter…. I’m just saying I want summer back already… here’s a few pics of recent rides and such. My mostly retired mare who has arthritis has been doing great so I took her for a few rides recently for about 15-30 minutes like the vet said we could. She was happy to get out and moving. I put a saddle on her for the first time in over a year and sheesh I’m sure glad I did because she was bouncing around like she had springs on her feet. Her name is Ebony and she’s the black Morgan Arabian cross.

Edit- also yes I am wearing crocs in the one picture. My first ride back on my mare and I wore crocs. I’m so not smart 🤦‍♀️😂 I did change I just rode to the house first lol.

They can be therapy animals. Cow herders. Big horses ( like shares) can pull things. Like logs or cars that are stuck in the mud. They are good for ranch work like checking fences.

They are a lot of work, and  extremely eexpensive, but there are a lot of good ways to cut costs. They don't always need a nice stable, just a shelter and blanket at the least. Not all horses are high maintenance either, you can keep a horse barefoot unless ridden hard, it isn't hurtful for a pleasure horse. A horse should be brushed at least once a week and kept clean, but it won't kill them if they're dirty for a little while. Tack and brushes are necessary, but you can buy saddles and bridges used to cut costs. Plus, a used saddle is broken in, no squeakiness. Feed and vet bills are the real expense. A good feed costs 25-30 dollars per 50lb bag, which will last one horse 2-4 weeks depending on diet, plus any necessary supplements. So yes, many expenses, but so worth it! Horses are amazing creatures, and can do pretty important jobs. There are horses for people with disabilities to ride, which helps them stretch their muscles and build lower body and core strenngth, horses for mounted policemen, ranch horses that herd cattle and check fences, and plain old pleasure horses that make people happy! They are good for mental health and exercise too.
