I have a blue laced Wyandotte who’s sitting on a nest of like 20 eggs for a bunch of different mothers. Two hatched this morning but nothing else yet. How long does it usually take for the other eggs to start hatching? There is a good chance that some of those eggs got added to the pile a week or more later then some of the other ones cause hens just kept sneaking in more eggs on her (or she was taking more for her self. Don’t they usually stop at 8-10 eggs? Why she have 20!?).

On a random unnecessary side note the two chicks that hatched are so cute! One is an Easter egger (dad) x Rhode Island Red (mom) and the other is white silkie (dad) x either Rhode Island Red/blue laced Wyandotte/ or black sex link (mom)

It just depends on when they were laid. My last egg from one clutch hatched this afternoon, and the oldest in that clutch hatched about a week or so ago. But this egg had been laid later on while the clutch was being brooded. Generally if they all start at the same time, they'll hatch within about a day.

And no, I've never met a bird that wouldn't add new eggs to their clutch if given half a chance. Many of my broodies won't start until they're on so many eggs they spill around the edges of the hen slightly.

I need some help, first time chicken hatcher here, 3 hens, 4 cockerals in same run and bed, its around 21 days as now, and so,eome told me its ok for chicks to run with cockersls is thst true? I see there was a brocken egg this morning, and presuming they (2 hens) are starting to hatch eggs, how lonh will it tske to hatch around 16 eggs, and should/when should i move them to there own pen ( cat crate inside a large dog crate, or should i just leave in with the cockerals and one other hen, just wondering how the chicks will just get there food and not the large hens food and via vera, i know i hadnt thought this though, mainly be ause i have a litter of pups on the ground 🤦‍♀️

Some of us let the broody raise the chicks with the flock. Some of us don't. We all have different set-ups and flocks so different things work. Even with the same set-up but with different flock members we can get different results. There is no one right answer for all of us where everything else is wrong. Different things can work or maybe there is something unique about you where one way is better than another. I have no idea what is best for you.

If they are all started on the same day the eggs should all hatch somewhat together. I've had hatches where the hatch was finished within 16 hours of the first one hatching. I've had some that dragged into the third day after the first one hatched. If incubation of all eggs did not start at the same time they can be spread out a long time.

and should/when should i move them to there own pen ( cat crate inside a large dog crate, or should i just leave in with the cockerals and one other hen,
Different people do different things. I leave them alone until the hen moves them off of the nest and leave them with the flock. Some move them to a pen when they want to move them to a pen. I don't do that so I don't know when they move them.

just wondering how the chicks will just get there food and not the large hens food and via vera,
You cannot keep the chicks out of the adult food. If you put the chick food inside something the chicks can enter but the adults cannot (called a creeper feeder) the chicks might eat it but the hen might not take them near there.

The way many of us do this is to feed them all the same food (a low calcium feed) and offer oyster shell on the side. The ones that need the calcium for eggshells will eat the oyster shell. The others will probably take an occasional bite but won't eat enough to harm themselves.
