I often hear, "Are Delawares friendly?" What do you think? ....

Dust bath at the horse shoe pit.

I decide to sit and watch a bit.

31282_july_17_2010_dels_039.jpg

Miss Della spies me, and leaves the dirt bath ...

31282_july_17_2010_dels_051.jpg

Here she comes ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_052.jpg

How about a back scratch ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_053.jpg

She jumps into my lap ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_054.jpg

And gives me a hug ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_055.jpg

And then talks to me ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_056.jpg

Mind you, she is filthy dirty from the dust bath! ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_062.jpg

She persists, though it is over 100* with not even a breeze, she wants to hug .... (Notice Miss Stella pacing nearby)

31282_july_17_2010_dels_063.jpg

I tell her she needs to get down and go get a drink of water ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_067.jpg

She's a mess! Hot, humid, sticky, dirty ..... She will just stay ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_069.jpg

Then, the jealous Miss Stella makes her presence known (next to my legs begging) ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_073.jpg

Switcheroo, and I take the camera, as she cons Brittney into holding her ....

31282_july_17_2010_dels_079.jpg

Another spoiled Delaware ....

These girls came from speckledhen's stock. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Cyn! They are just the sweetest things ever. We absolutely love them! We have only had Dels for 8 months, and we will never be without Delawares, as long as we have chickens. They are the best of everything to us .... excellent layers, best dispositions, and just a joy to have around. It doesn't even take treats for these girls to come to us. They simply love human interaction, attention and affection. They are amazing to me!

Thanks to you, too, Nifty .... for BYC, and for the Platinum Feather Member opportunity.

(DD took the camera from me, and I would never have posted if I hadn't lost a bet! Obviously, I am not photogenic!). But I sure do like to post chicken pictures!

Ms.FuzzyButts :

Awww, now I want Delawares... Those pics are just too cute!

I'm tellin' ya .... I think everyone should have a Delaware or two (or ten or so)! Honestly! I must say though, the friendliness factor is in the stock. I have heard of hatchery stock Dels being aggressive. Delawares were originally bred for their disposition (as well as other traits, of course), and alot of hatchery stock has lost this most important trait. If you want sweet tempered friendly Dels, be sure to check where they come from and ask about this.

Mine are exactly the same way, Kathy. Even big Isaac loves a chest rub daily. He is amazingly sweet with me. The Dels are personality plus!

I know first hand about aggressive hatchery stock--that almost made me pass on the offer of hatching eggs from breeder stock. Glad I didn't let that one go by. Thanks to seriousbill (Janet) for talking me into it.
