Icelandic Chickens

My original two hens, hatched first week of May, were broody the first time at 12 months and 13 months.
Daughter of the hen that went broody at 12 months, went broody at 9 months....hatched in mid-August, broody mid-May. I would say individuals differ by time of the year more than actual age. I had an 11 month old pullet go broody last month and put her in with a cockerel I had in "solitary" she is back laying now. I'll let her sit if she goes broody again, since the weather is starting to show signs of moderating.

C'mon Spring!!

My icelandics still haven't started up back laying at full production!! I get one egg out of three hens a day, but often I don't get any:(

I really am hoping one goes broody! When do they typically do this, does age play into it? My hens are probably around 11 mo. or so

I've wondered about this, too, and if it can depend on the bloodlines. The reason I say that is because I have three pullets - two are about 6 or 7 months old (I don't remember) but the other is 8 or 9 months old. The younger sisters are originally from Shawn's stock and started laying at about the same time my older pullet, Flekka started laying. In fact, they may even have started just a few days before her..... Bah, I'm too old inside.

Lookie lookie! Eggs are from debs_flock! 14 of these were Icelandic that went under my broody hen tonight.

i really don't like the photobucket thing but its all I can do with an iPad.

if you look at the next 2 pics you see my red, white & blue boy. He is so friendly and photogenic. The pic after that one shows the Icee's spending their first night on the big chicken roost.

Yay, I'm anxious to see how they do for you..................and the rocks for me!

Of my 7 Icelandic hens, only two have gone broody, Ida & Blucy Both hatched at New Years one went broody in November, the other in December.

Good news finally I think I have an Icelandic chickie only time will tell. I put an Icee egg under my broody and it hatched! But I have a Golden Capine and their eggs are about the same so I don't know which was which. It's a little yellow chick. Are Golden Capine chicks yellow I can't remember. I will have to check that out.

Actually, they have kind of a wild type coloration when they're born.

Oh dear, be careful what you wish for! If one starts they all will, then you'll have all broodies and no layers!
hahah, well since they are laying so poorly right now anyways, might as well have them working to hatch out some eggies since my incubator is full...

thanks for all the input.. do the usually go broody in a nest box? My icelandic's rarely lay in the nest box as it is, but if they are broody will they go in there?
