Hello! I was wondering if it is possible for chickens to have diseases such as avian influenza, salmonella, e-coli, etc without showing symptoms. I would like to know since I often am in very close contact with my chickens (holding them close to mouth, and face). I read that this can be dangerous for both me and the chickens.

None of my hens (4) have any symptoms of illness and have never had serious illnesses. Only issues is that my Buff Cochin had a small respitory illness as a chick (nose discharge) and went away without spreading to the others. This was before I was educated.

They have no access to wild birds/other flocks, so I don't think avian influenza will occur anytime soon. I just want to be prepared for the worst. Thank you!

When chickens are overwhelmed by the diseases you mentioned, they will show symptoms. I have dealt with ecoli infections in poultry. Also, there are more diseases and parasites that you need to be aware of.
I most highly recommend that you practice strict biosecurity with yourself and your chickens. There is no need to risk picking up any kind of disease(s) from your birds. Here's a couple of links for you to read:

To avoid getting some type illness of transmitted from your chickens to you (Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. Coli, etc.) keep them out of your face and wash your hands with soap/water after handling the birds.
