Hello! I was wondering if it is possible for chickens to have diseases such as avian influenza, salmonella, e-coli, etc without showing symptoms. I would like to know since I often am in very close contact with my chickens (holding them close to mouth, and face). I read that this can be dangerous for both me and the chickens.
None of my hens (4) have any symptoms of illness and have never had serious illnesses. Only issues is that my Buff Cochin had a small respitory illness as a chick (nose discharge) and went away without spreading to the others. This was before I was educated.
They have no access to wild birds/other flocks, so I don't think avian influenza will occur anytime soon. I just want to be prepared for the worst. Thank you!
(below is buff cochin, right, vs my easter egger, who is often energetic)
