We have had our daughter's male black and tan mini-dashound for a couple of weeks while they were gone on vacation. Today we gave him back to them. Today I also realized our Great Pyrenees is in heat.

My hope and prayer is that she just came in heat and has not accepted his "advances".

What in the world would we even have if Paris gives birth to 1/2 weiner dog X 1/2 GP?

I can see it now.........black and tan........long haired.........massive body with a broad head..........on four inch crooked stumpy legs.

I have my fingers crossed that this is one blessed event that will NOT take place.......... Anybody want a Great Wee-Nees?

Yep that hormone cocktail they use is very hard on the dog. If she is receptive and has accepted him even for a short time (a tie doesn't need to happen to have a nice big litter) then I would just have her spayed right away. Chances are if you have just noticed she is in heat then she isn't ready. You can always check to see if she's ready by "borrowing" an intact male and letting them meet through a fence on leash. If she flags for him and seems taken by him they you might be in trouble. If she is disinterested or down right hostile she isn't ready and has not been ready while the Doxy was at your house.

Yes, there is a "morning after" shot you can get from your vet. However, if you have no plans of breeding the GP responsibly, I would recommend getting her spayed. It CAN happen, I've seen a Norwich Terrier/Norwegian Elkhound mix where the mating was witnessed by the owner (who was running them together thinking it could NEVER happen because of the size difference lol). He was really cute...looked like a giant Norwich with an Elkhound tail.

I worked in a dog daycare where there was a lab mixed with a basset hound. Saddest thing ever. Lab head, huge thick neck, lab tail, all black, heavy (bear style) lab body... on stump legs.

Who knows, maybe you could make the next hot "designer" breed. Great Pieners... Errrrr

Do you have any pictures? I would love to see a picture of this dog!

I have a basset hound, and that short little fellow will figure out a way to make it happen, big OR small. Years ago we had several hog hunting dogs and the neighbors little short legged beagle broke in & bred a big 80+ lb catahoula female. I just happened to look in the pen and see it. I learned two things that day.... a bigger female dog will make it easier to get to, and a little male dog with the right "incentive" absolutely WILL stretch & reach & climb to achieve his objective. The "beag-ahoula" puppies were cute though LOL. My parents kept one for years.

A great wee-nees! That's hilarious! I wouldn't worry too much. Chances of that being succesful are very slim (my schip tries with my asds, we just laugh) and if she just started her heat, she probably isn't fertile yet. If the blood is still lighlt red, its early in the cycle. It usually goes to a light brown reddish when they ovulate.
There is a morning -after shot, but it has some nasty side effects and I wouldn't do it unless you knew a breeding had taken place and it was totally necessary for the moms health or something.
