Is this a good harness for dog carting? **Harness Arrived! PICTURES!**

You have a beautiful dog there! And a good cart too!

I just started making my cart yesterday. Pictures to come.

Here are some pictures of my cart. I got the wheels off of an old childs carriage. The bin was just hanging around the yard and wasn't being used. I still need to add the poles (I am going to use PVC pipes). And I still need to order her harness from the nordykn website (I am going to go with the siwash one, not the siwash wiczech one).
The bin closed:

So far it has cost me $0.00 Those commercial ones are nice, but boy are they expensive!

Maybe someone's already said this, but for pulling a cart you should never use a harness where the chest strap goes straight across the chest...if the dog needs to lower his head for more power while pulling, the strap can slide up and dig into the base of his throat, making it hard for him to breathe. Also, a straight chest strap tends to ride across the front of his shoulders, interfering with the movement of his front legs. Bad, bad, bad! The siwash is good. I prefer the style where you can remove the traces (the long straps that attach the dog to the front of the cart). This way, if you want to take the dog out of the cart but leave the harness on (like for a pee break), you don't have the harness dragging on the ground and getting tangled in the dog's back feet. I have four Newfoundlands and two Australian Shepherds, and both breeds pull carts. I use the same type of harness on all of them.

Carting is a blast...you can not only do practical stuff like hauling firewood, but you can give cart rides to kids, return your books to the library, go on picnics, dress up the dog and the cart for Halloween... a Newf I used to have was a Landseer (white with black patches) and I made my wagon into a covered wagon, made him a headpiece with horns and ears, and wrapped his tail with gauze except for a tuft at the end, and voila - an ox pulling his family westward in a covered wagon. He won many a costume class at fun match dog shows!

Best of luck, have fun with it.

Thank you. I will definitaly be going with a siwash type harness. That is a good idea to dress your dog up for halloween with his cart! Very creative with the covered wagon!
