If you want to use the trash can idea for feed, get a water heater base pan to set the can in, it should have higher sides, to help contain the feed. With the no waste feeders, using the 90 degree elbow pointing down, use 4 inch elbows. People with roosters do not seem to have problems, using the 4 inch. I use 3 inch elbows, but don't have roos.

Horizontal nipples are what you will need for clean water 24/7. What ever container you decide to use and a 250 watt non floating stock tank de icer for winter. The de icer needs to be on the bottom of the container. I use a 14 gallon drum and 5 gallon bucket for my waterers with horizontal nipples.

This is a link to my recent post detailing my very non-professional attempt at using a 20 gallon hazardous waste collection barrel to make a PVC feeder. I think it could work well for you. Very sturdy/thick barrel and way overkill for the lid and closure mechanism. Even has handles molded into the tub if you want to carry it somewhere. Don't know what a metal trash can would cost you, but my barrel cost about 40 bucks.

For the waterer, I think the idea of a large container with horizontal nipples is the way to go. If you do go this way, I would ensure you have enough of an access hole to drop a stock tank de-icer in there. 5 gallon bucket works well. 7 gallon bucket even better. Big 20-30-50 gallon drum even better (assuming the drum had a removable lid and not just a small couple inch round bung hole).

The blue container @blackdog043 shows in their photo is available from Amazon, the same place I got my yellow barrel from.
