Dont soak it, just dab with a q-tip or cotton ball. And blot any blood. If if bleeds much, stop for a while and let it rest and recover. Good luck!

Keeping the membrane moist will also let you see where the veining is in the membrane.

You can swab around the beak a bit too, so it has fresh air to breathe without too much moisture seeping in

I have 2 incubators... one that I run dry- Hovabator... and it is about 40... and the other... LG9300 that i hatch in.... that is the one that shrinkwrapped ALL my chicks the last time... so this time extra precaution is going to be taken.

Once you get some of the shell off and can moisten the membrane you will be able to see where the veins are in the membrane and if they have or are drying enough that you can start to sperate the membrane. If you can chip the shell around the egg at the pip hole you might be able to start to roll the membrane down as well. It's hard to instruct when you can't see the situation.
