Maine

Meant to message you! DOB was 4/19, I think I put 3/19 by accident before. So they're about 6.5 weeks now.

Which one is it? If its turning bright red this early, she may have turned out to be a he. :( I have a few more pullets here I think, that I can switch out if it turns out to be a boy. Can you get a pic? I don't think they really get sunburnt, but I could be wrong!

Checked on my broody girls just now. Lucy (my splash orp) was off the nest, but Fluffy McPuffyPants (blue cochin) is still sitting. Yay! Rita, my blue orp, should have her brood hatch come Friday. Can't wait to see what she hatches out.

I would just add a block of something to their brooder to scratch their beaks and nails on... I usually use a brick or a cinderblock.

Also their beaks can't be that long at 5 weeks, I think they're probably fine.
OK. Thanks for the advice. Never thought of that. DInd't think they'd bother with it, but I'll give it a try. Thanks

Well, we closed on our house last week and have been cleaning and doing yard work ever since! The whole yard was pretty much neglected for 2 years, so there is a lot to do, but it's looking better already. The coop is in rough shape and will require a good deal of shoring up, particularly since I saw a mother fox with her two babies playing in the woods right next to the house yesterday. (The previous owner lost his entire flock to a fox one night and gave up.)

I have a non-chicken related question... we have a very old tree in our yard that I'd like to have someone come look at. It needs some help. Does anyone have a recommendation for an arborist/tree specialist? I'm hesitant to bring in a company like a Lucas, since in my experience they tend to be quick to just cut stuff down or treat with chemicals.

The chicken in question. The picture isn't showing quite how red the comb appears. Pullet or roo? IMO other than the comb, all signs point to pullet. He/she is in the middle of the pecking order if that helps.

I don't know where your locates but "Spicer" out of Whitefield did some tree work for me (removal). But he is a licensed arborist and seemed very knowledgeable about tree care

So sorry to hear about Humpty Dumpty, gracejr.

Lazy gardener, I don't know if the raccoons will drop down out of the trees or not, but the trees could offer some hawk protection.

We have our game cam in the woods, just about 100 yards from the house, and it is scary how many photos we get of raccoons, fox, and coyote. Usually they are passing through there around 4 a.m.

Gracejr--Been there, done that with the grandparents. DD's very last sports game, under the lights, read "Very Big Deal". Same night, the grandparent goes to a different game... 2 1/2 hours away...doesn't know a soul playing in that game thennnnn sees us 2 days later and asks when DD's last game is 'cuz they wanted to go. Not only did we give them a schedule but DH had mentioned it several days before.
