It is great if you can find local chicks or hatching eggs, but if you are after a particular breed, I find it easier to order eggs online. You take your chances though, usually only 50% will hatch after shipping. And then you need an incubator...
Plus you'll have a bunch of roosters to grow out for the freezer, which can be a pain when they start fighting. The year I ordered the golden cuckoo marans eggs, 8 of 15 hatched, and they were all male!
