Naked Neck/Turken Thread

For those of you on the Breeding for Production thread, I posted this there as well. A new year, another outbreak of Avian flu. Guard your flocks!

I don't want to derail the thread, but this should be a serious warning to a lot of people! I'm going to make a more thorough post on the last topic of the week thread. (I'll post link here shortly...)

Awesome. That would be a good project. Keep us updated.

Do you guys think my NN chicks will be over 5 pounds by time they are 4 months old?

It depends on your birds and their source (I forget - where did you get them?). Two of the hatchery boys I got from Ideal (Tank and Snape) were well over 5 pounds (almost 6 lbs) by 16 weeks, but most of the other boys were not, and in my experience, the pullets weight significantly less than the cockerels. I recommend keeping track of their weights, and if it is important to you, be sure to use weight (esp. early growth) in your breeding decisions. That's why I kept Tank and Snape and culled the others. Tank is the sire of my NNxGNH crosses, and about half of his sons are bigger than he was at the same age.

McMurray they are all pullets. I am not sure if I will breed NNs or just keep crossing them with my layers since I do not have the room for another breeding operation..

Someone else may chime in, but in my experience pullets are relatively small compared to the cockerels. I don't have any big girls (yet). But those smaller girls lay eggs that turn into big boys. Depending on what breed you cross them with, you may do well. And in my experience, they lay quite well as well, so it's a win win.

I second what @Fire Ant Farm says. I've had several cockerels reach 5 lbs by 16 weeks or sooner, but even my biggest girls take significantly longer than that to reach that weight.

Do you think crossing with a LF Cochins could help with larger weight on them or would that just slow them down in growing?
