Nest box material

What are the suggestions for material in the nest boxes?

I read some say straw and some use pine chips etc.?

How about one of those pads under the box material as a liner?

I like cut squares of astroturf. It's soft for the eggs and the hens don't kick out shavings. When it gets poop on it you can easily rinse and replace.

Shredded bills and junk mail, no glossy paper.

If it gets spoiled, I just grab and dump in the run.

Free and an endless supply...

I use aspen or pine shavings and pad with a folded feed bag to help cushion eggs from breakage.

I use pine shavings for the bottom, then the top layer is straw.

I use shaving, no problem getting kicked out of their nest box; a huge dog house; now & then I give it a fluffing ...

I use a carpet runner. Easy to clean and I get clean eggs out the back of my nest box.

Mine are lined with a vinyl sheet, for ease of removal and cleaning up of broken eggs, then stuffed with straw.

What are the suggestions for material in the nest boxes?

I have 68 trips around the sun for decades I have been raising chickens
For years I have been lining my nest boxes with the folded empty nylon mesh feed bags.

Chickens poop in nest boxes get used to it.

When a bag gets soiled pop out the soiled and pop in another. Poop just peels off in below freezing temperatures and just flakes off when left out in the sun to bake and dry. It is the best method I have stumbled upon in my 68 trips around the sun.

Oh! Remove the excess string from the open end of the bag it can get tangled in your birds legs and wings.

Mine never poop in the nest box... I'm used to that.
