Nesting Box Material

How do I keep those nesting boxes clean? When I put in straw, they kick it out, if I leave it bare, they poop in there (with straw too). They would rather lay their eggs on the ground and use the nesting boxes as toilets. Some of the hens sleep in them, but there I one box in particular they ALWAYS poop in and I usually find a pretty good size pile in there, having to clean it out nearly every day. Any ideas?

You can put wood shavings in the nest boxes.
