New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Pics
I realize it might be a long wait for eggs but a girl can dream! No offense but I’m glad I didn’t go to pick up my Brahma chicks at the age yours are now or I might have passed. It was bad enough I brought home some ugly ostrich looking things, which you might find is the next stage. LOL

For some reason my chickens decided to hang out under the deck this morning instead of the normal places they go where I might be able to get better pictures.

Butter.

Pickles. Now that I look closer, her foot feathers do have black tips.

Together. Butter still has no real tail feathers to speak of and slow-to-mature is an understatement. It’s only been the last few weeks that she seemed to understand the program here.

Both with my nearly 8 month old RSL. They have been larger than her for around 2 months but she’s still the boss and they don’t seem to care.

In that photo, I can really now see that Butter is definitely a splash! In the other pictures, she seemed blue, but nope, very definitely a splash Partridge, which means she carries two blue genes rather than one.

Hey, now, I think mine are beautiful!

Yes, they're awkward, but the Barred Rock males go through a particularly awkward stage when their legs get really long and before their bodies bulk up to match. To watch them run is a hoot!

Chickencake, you can upload pictures into BYC, look on the menu along the top of the reply box and click on the little photo icon. It would be easier to look at them that way.

+1

I realize I haven't really taken many pictures of B.J., my only Dark chick. She is beginning to get her laced feathers on the chest area now, though they are so small, it's hard to see.

Genetics question: Say the big light colored male is a splash rather than a blue. I have B.J., the dark pullet, so was wondering, is that crossing where you might get Silver Blue in one sex or the other? I am a little confused (what's new?) on it but seems like I read you get mismarked Dark males and silver blue pullets? If someone can clarify, would be appreciative. The pullets I have are 2 partridge/gold, 1 blue partridge and 1 Dark. I may keep both the blue/splash male (unsure on which he is) and the gorgeous partridge, if I can figure out how to house them here. I know splash pt x partridge = all blue partridge chicks, but I wasn't sure on the splash over dark.

'Dark' is a silver base color. Splash/Blue Partridge is the same pattern, but with a gold/red base color. A silver hen can only pass that silver base color gene to her male offspring. She would produce a type of red sexlink. All the males would be similar to 'Dark' male chicks, but may develop red leakage. All the pullets would be Partridge, with no silver gene at all. If the rooster is Splash, all the chicks will also get a Blue gene. If he's Blue, only some will have a Blue gene, the rest will be plain Partridge or Dark. The blue gene is not sexlinked.

I know that the blue gene is not sex linked. I saw these statements on another forum on the web. I think it is saying the same thing you told me. If so, I would not be able to get a blue silver because my Dark would be the hen, not the rooster, right? Just pondering a little. I'm way ahead of myself anyway, other than if the male I have is actually splash then I'd get a lot more blue partridge with him over the two partridge pullets (and of course, more splash and blue over the blue pt girl).

Correct. However, the Dark males should be correctly patterned, they will just have leakage.
If you were to take the best overall male from that breeding and pair him with Partridge/Blue Partridge hens, he would produce 50% BBS Partridge, and 50% BBS Dark (males will have leakage), since he would have both silver and gold base color genes. The good thing about the Dark variety is that the pattern genes aren't nearly as much of a mess as the Blue Partridge can be. She may really help to clean up the patterning issues.
