It's probably a good reason to avoid lidocaine and other -caine drugs, and use other ones instead. IV injection is the greater risk here rather than topical use. Here are a few articles and treads about the use of -caine medicines in chickens:

Why Not Local Anesthesia? (from exoticpetvet.com)

[/COLOR] A bird requiring surgery will usually receive general anesthesia. There are several reasons for this. Many local anesthetic agents, such as lidocaine (usually erroneously called novocaine by lay people) that can numb an area, are toxic at doses that provide numbness! Lidocaine must be precisely dosed, and even so, the dose necessary to provide local anesthesia is greater than the toxic dose, in most cases (in small birds). It can be used in tame, large birds, if necessary. Another problem with using a local anesthetic agent is because restraining a bird awake is often very stressful. Signs of overdose with lidocaine may include excitement initially, seizures, depression, respiratory arrest, cardiovascular collapse and death.
it clearly says local anesthetic I.E INJECTABLE...... NOT TOPICAL

I did mention that in my post, but many medicines are absorbed into the bloodstream if enough is used. Just because you haven't had any bad reactions with Bactine, doesn't necessarily mean that it is wise to use it. Saline is probably the safest thing to use, isn't it?

It is factual if you read the links of studies posted, but, to those who want to argue, its doesn't really help the person here who is asking for help. I really don't care about this debate, because you haven't shown any proof that Bactine or lidocaine is safe to use in chickens. When other less toxic antiseptics are available, why use something that may be a problem?

I'm not trying to be an ***, but I want yall to know the truth ;) bactine isn't unless your chick has an alergic reaction fatal to birds... and fyi any animal can O.D. on lidocaine or almost any other chemical if the does is high enough hell, you can die from water intoxification...js

Bactine is safe you'd have to shove like 10 bottles down a chickens neck to kill it, https://books.google.com/books?id=L...idocaine should be fatal to a chicken&f=false this article explains lidocaine being used to treat arthritic pain in chickens.... amongst other things

is this not scientific proof? Those articles are bs he said she said mine are scientific studies

look you don't have to believe me I'm done.... but please do legitimate Research before you tell people things, it is really sad that people just believe whatever someone else says based on something that someone told them instead of doing actual Research and knowing the truth

My Guinea Fowl had gotten in our dog run, and all 9 of the little dogs attached her. She has some back injuries, but she isn't in critical condition
