Yesterday, a Peregrin Falcon came for lunch! He left hungry! We have rope strung all over one side of the yard to protect the chickens from the falcons here (We live in downtown Evansville and they introduced them to control the pigeon population). Hawks and falcons generally will not drop down through rope strung around (it gives the illusion of netting). However, this one landed on our fence and then jumped down into the yard. This gave the chickens lots of warning and they were frantic and running for cover! All of the babies seemed to have disappeared, good skills that mama taught them. But the falcon was literally on top of my little Seabright mix hen, Bertha! Lawrence is not her "man". But, was defending the entire flock! He is blind in one eye, but he went off on the falcon! (Lawrence is a Silkie/Buff Orp. mix and he is very large for that mix, he is as big if not slightly bigger than the falcon!) He jumped on it and flogged it over and over! Needless to say, the falcon didn't think much about Bertha anymore! And he high tailed it out of here (but got a little tangled in the rope before hand). So Lawrence is HERO of the summer!!!
And we added a lot more rope to the weaving!
We've always loved our Lawrence!
